Let’s talk katana. Now, we all know it’s a thing of beauty, probably the most famous weapon in Japanese culture. But have you ever wondered what all the parts of a katana are for? I’m talking about the tsuba, tsuka, and sageo. Are they just there for show, or do they actually mean something?

Well, as a Japanese katana trainee, Shogo is here to break it down for you. He’ll explain the purpose of each of these three parts. But hey, keep in mind, he’s talking about the standard katana used from the Edo period right up to today. Depending on the era, things could be totally different.

He’s also gonna show you an iaidō kata, a katana routine still practiced today. That way, you can see exactly how each part of the sword is used in action.
