Arak, Son of Thunder

Arak, Son of Thunder was a comic book superhero published by DC Comics. Created by Roy Thomas and Ernie Colón, he made his debut in The Warlord #48 in August 1981.

Now, in the beginning, Arak was pretty much a Conan knock-off. But after a little encounter with the Moirai, his destiny got a bit clearer. He started rockin’ a more Native American look, with fringed pants and a Mohawk.

Unlike Conan, who dealt with Lovecraftian monsters, Arak went head-to-head with figures and creatures from all sorts of myths and legends—Greek, Norse, Judeo-Christian, Muslim, you name it.

Now, here’s the thing about Arak. Back in the day, he was pretty culturally sensitive. Unlike other Native American heroes, Arak wasn’t about that broken speech or stereotypical traits. And let’s talk about the Vikings. These guys actually looked like real Vikings, none of that horned helmet and fur clothing nonsense. Arak was ahead of his time, man.
