Vikings & Valkyries

Ian Stuart Sharpe’s Vikingverse is a wild Norse saga—novels, comics, and a TTRPG, When The Wolf Comes. Heroes, stars, Ragnarök. Epic. Skål!
Vikings & Valkyries

So, a few months back, I sat down with Ian Stuart Sharpe—a fellow comic book creator and the mastermind behind Vikingverse. Now, let me tell you, this guy isn’t just dabbling in Norse mythology; he’s building a full-blown media empire. Novels? Check. Comics? Check. Games? Oh yeah, games. Wait, hold up—games? That’s right, baby. Ian’s cooked up a TTRPG—tabletop role-playing game, for you uninitiated—called When The Wolf Comes.

And it’s not just any game. This thing’s a straight-up saga of storytelling, heroism, and epic struggle, all set in this crazy reimagined Ragnarök where the Norse didn’t just rule the seas; they’ve got their boots planted in the stars. Christianity? Yeah, they put that to the Viking sword. It’s brutal. It’s wild. It’s awesome.

So I tell Ian, “You gotta run an actual play, man.” For those of you who don’t know, an actual play is like a podcast or web show where people play TTRPGs for an audience. But Ian? He’s already miles ahead of me. Dude’s got Vikings & Valkyries cooking, an actual play dripping with his unique take on Viking lore. And guess what? He invited me to join a session.

My character, Bakfour—talked like a cockney pirate, naturally—went out in the most glorious, over-the-top blaze of glory you can imagine. It was perfection. Every episode of Vikings & Valkyries? It’s like a feast. You’ll be laughing your ass off one minute, choking on your mead, and then pounding your chest with a broadsword at the cast of characters heroism.

Listen to me: you need to check this out. Vikings & Valkyries will make you wanna grab a shield, grow a beard, and shout “Skål!” at the top of your lungs. And who knows? Maybe we’ll inspire you to pick up some dice and play your own game of When The Wolf Comes. Do it. You’ll thank me later.

Our saga begins in Hjálpmakaar, the northernmost inhabited remnant of empire, and the last best hope for Midgard to recover from the Great Winter.

The PCs are asked to escort a dying man on his last journey only to find themselves drawn into a bitter blood feud. Will they outwit or outfight their rivals, and forge the bonds of friendship and trust they need to carry on to even greater adventures?

Or are they already on the first step of the Stairway to Valhalla?

Spoiler: Let’s just say the title of the adventure is aspirational…

Finnbogi Ásbjarnarson has laid a claim against the player characters and they are summoned to the Law Thing to defend themselves.

What could possibly go wrong?

The headman of a nearby jötnar settlement curses the players, forcing them to seek him out. To earn his forgiveness, they must join his bloodthirsty tribe on a series of sacred hunts and live to tell the tale.
